In John 4:24, Jesus said, "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
So if God created us in his image, he is talking about our spirit, our soul, our essence, not our bodies. Human souls might not have evolved; it's outside the realm of science to say so. Our bodies, however, did evolve.
Science can, by definition, deal only with natural phenomena. The soul is outside its realm, so science can make no deductions regarding a soul.
This is consistent with the official Catholic position and many Protestant denominations concur.
If you believe our souls were specially created by God, there is no need to feel a disconnection from God because of a belief that our bodies evolved.
